Typical delivery times
The table shows the time most articles take in working days, counted from the day after booking. India Post doesn't publish a guarantee for every route, so treat these as realistic estimates.
| Route | Example | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Local (same city) | Within Delhi | 1 to 2 days |
| Within the same state | Pune → Nagpur | 2 to 3 days |
| Metro to metro | Mumbai → Chennai | 2 to 3 days |
| State capital to state capital | Jaipur → Bhopal | 3 to 4 days |
| Other interstate routes | Ludhiana → Madurai | 3 to 5 days |
| North East, J&K, hills, islands | Kolkata → Port Blair | 5 to 7 days or more |
How days are counted
Delivery time is counted in working days. Sundays and national holidays are not counted, although some city offices do deliver on Sundays. An article booked late in the evening is usually dispatched the next morning, so it effectively starts its journey a day later.
As a rule of thumb, if you book before about 2 pm on a weekday at a large post office, your article is likely to be dispatched the same day.
What causes delays
- Distance from a sorting hub. Villages served by a Branch Office add a day or two because mail travels from the Head Office to the Sub Office and then to the Branch Office.
- Festivals and peak seasons. Diwali, Rakhi, exam result periods and the end of the financial year bring huge volumes.
- Weather and transport. Monsoon floods, fog in North India and landslides in hill states can hold up road and rail links.
- Address problems. A wrong or missing PIN code sends the article to the wrong office first.
- Failed delivery attempts. If nobody is home, the article may wait at the post office.
International Speed Post (EMS)
International Speed Post uses the global EMS network. Most destinations take 5 to 10 working days, plus any time spent in customs. After the article leaves India, tracking depends on the destination country's postal service, so updates can be slower or worded differently. Use the same 13 character number on the destination country's postal website for the final leg.
Tips to avoid delays
- Write the full address with the correct six digit PIN code and a phone number.
- Book earlier in the day at a larger post office.
- Avoid sending urgent documents just before long weekends or festivals.
- Ask the receiver to keep their phone available, because OTP based delivery needs them to share a code.
- Track the article daily and act quickly if it shows 'Addressee not available'.
